  • "Janelle made what could be dry material really, really interesting. I feel like this class taught me so many important things about the world and really changed the way I looked at things. The two parts of the class that really stood out to me were when we learned about the 2008 financial crisis and when we learned about healthcare reform. These two issues were ones I never fully understood, and always felt uninformed about prior to this class. Now I feel really educated about these topics, and that is the thing I will most take away from this course.  Janelle was an awesome instructor. She was relatable and very smart. She also truly cared about students and really knows how to control the classroom, which is really important. I really, really liked this class. She explains complex topics in a way that’s really easy to understand. She also was really helpful one-on-one with coming up with final paper topics. She really cares about her students and is also an awesome instructor - one of the most enthusiastic and effective educators I have had at this university. She held high expectations for the class on a day to day basis, encouraging meaningful class participation and a high level of critical thinking.  Her lectures were clear and powerful.  They taught me a lot about the world around me.  She was always readily available to help with class work or answer any questions we had about the material.  She showed very interesting documentaries in and out of class that worked brilliantly as a supplement to her lectures and the class readings.  Her exams were appropriately challenging and fairly accessed if we were thoroughly understanding the material."
  • “The entire course was fair- everything explained in the lectures and offered in the readings was fairly presented in the exams. Without fail grades were posted every week with feedback. The lectures were engaging and presented to as a student to student CONVERSATION. I really enjoyed this class.”
  • “Having the weekly blog posts definitely made sure I was caught up on my work every week and did not allow me to fall behind. They were also good review sources of the readings when it was exam time. Lecture was interesting and it was easy to pay attention to. Having the power points ahead of time really allowed me to take detailed notes during class. Janelle kept class engaging by allowing group discussion and her class group activities was a helpful way to review and apply material. This has been my favorite class at Penn State, and I have learned more in this class than I have in any other class at Penn State. Janelle is an excellent teacher and is extremely fair in grading if you put the work in to it and do not slack off.”
  • “Janelle's enthusiasm and teaching style are what helped me learn and excel in the class. I am currently a junior and I can say that Janelle is the best professor I’ve had at Penn State. She made the material that I otherwise would not have enjoyed interesting and engaging. She also extended her role as a professor outside the classroom, helping several students with their career aspirations and giving me advice/guidance on internships.”
  • “Her passion. Her drive. And her ability to directly relate topics in class to every-day examples and then cross them over to an international level. You can tell that she is not just a professor teaching the subject matter, she is a passionate individual journalist and researcher that knows the ins and outs of subject matters she discusses in class.  I think that the environment she creates is second to none and that’s why participation in class comes naturally.  No matter what question is asked, almost all of the time someone has an opinion that sparks further discussion.”
  • “I think this is the first time the teacher’s attitude has ever been a huge help in my learning ability. Ms. Applequist is the first college professor I’ve had that I've felt was relatable, interesting, and fun.”
  • “During her lectures Janelle does a really great job at explaining the material beyond what is on the PowerPoint slides. Instead of just reading the same information provided on the screen Janelle explains everything additionally in a very clear and easy to understand way. It makes learning and studying a lot easier.”

  • "The weekly readings for this course helped me to learn a lot this semester.  I think they were tied in well to the lectures of the week, and they often made me question some of the long held beliefs I've had.  The Instructor's ability to make a large classroom seem like a small one for everyone was impressive.  In most small classes people are scared to speak up, but in this class we often had long conversations involving many different people.  Each class began with a discussion on world events, that we were responsible for finding, and after the first few classes we never had a day where people weren't prepared.  The Instructor was highly motivated and prepared for every lecture.  You can tell that she has a passion for the material, and I am highly recommending taking this course to all my friends looking for a 400-level comm class.  It was refreshing to have a Professor that was so excited to be in class everyday.  I think the most impressive thing was that by the mid-point of the semester she knew everyone by name, and would call on you by name.  That's something I've never experienced before in a class of that size."
  • "Janelle was amazing.  The way she presented the material actually made me think about what I was learning and therefore I was able to retain the information even after the tests were over.  It was so refreshing to be in a class where the Instructor cared about the students and wanted them to succeed.  I learned more in this class than any other class I have taken at Penn State thus far."
  • "Professor Applequist was honestly the best resource throughout the semester.  She was very enthusiastic about making sure we understood the concepts and she was very supportive of us and always wanted us to try our best while still challenging us."
  • "I wasn't really excited for COMM 410 until I walked into class the first day.  Janelle created a really interesting and fun learning environment.  Her enthusiasm for teaching makes learning all the more fun.  She's the only Professor who I thought actually cared about her students.  Her lectures were easy to understand (even for the difficult subject matter), encouragement shown in class and through comments on our weekly Yammer posts were motivating, and the films we viewed really helped me make connectons with the material learned in class.  Janelle was by far the best Instructor I've had at Penn State."
  • "I think the best aspect of this class that helped me learn was the Professor's ability to communicate with the class.  Her communication and understanding of college students allowed the class to learn in ways that other Professors cannot do."
  • "The responses we had to do every week were instrumental in the learning process.  I also liked that we had to complete one every week, even weeks with exams.  This really made me understand the material.  I also think that she treats us as adults, we are expected to do the readings and the lectures help us to understand these readings but do not act as an alternative to completing the readings.  This class was great and Janelle is a wonderful teacher.  As a Senior I have had many different types of Instructors and she stood out.  She did a better job of keeping the material interesting than some of my older teachers who have been at Penn State for a long time.  She has a lot of energy and is willing to help students in any way she can.  I had to reschedule an exam and she was very fair and understanding about my situation.  Great teacher and I am happy that she was my Instructor for my last semester at Penn State!"

Memorable Comments from Students:

  • "Janelle does an excellent job of keeping students engaged in the lectures by using relevant examples, pop culture references that students can connect with, and
lastly movie clips as visual aids to reinforce the main ideas from the readings. I enjoyed how she does not take a bias on controversial issues and leaves it up to the
students to draw conclusions. Janelle has successfully allowed me to gain a much deeper perspective on important global issues. She is hands down the best teacher I
have had at Penn State and I truly believe I was able to gain so much from this class. Thanks for being so helpful!"
  • "Janelle was one of my favorite teachers here at Penn State so far, she came to class everyday lively and excited to teach the class and help us learn. I think what helped me in this class was her enthusiasm on each topic and relating it to our lives. We would start the class every day with a discussion and asking what top news is going on around the world. It was very fascinating to learn all of the crazy things not just happening in the US but around the world. Janelle is a great teacher witha passion that is obvious on the topics she is teaching (international communications) and I loved taking this class with her."
  • "Janelle made the class interesting and relevant. Having large class discussions, and making people feel comfortable with expressing their opinions really encouraged everyone to participate which showed everyone's unique perspective on a global topic."
  • "Janelle is very optimistic about the subject matter studied in the course, and has clearly done a lot of research on the topics presented in class. She makes herself
incredibly easy to relate to, and thus encourages students to pay attention during class. Making the course reading part of her in class lectures every week, instead
of just assigning reading to do as ''extra material,'' really helped to make clear and drive home the most important points to take away from the lessons."
  • "Janelle is excellent! She is always ready to help students who have questions and is always successful in beginning class discussions that everyone wants to be a
part of. She is a very fair grader and offers students many opportunities to succeed. I hope that I will have Janelle as a teacher again in the future."
  • "I really enjoyed all our in-class discussions because the teacher and the students were very interactive so we could discuss an array of issues and all compare our
points of view. I thought the powerpoints were easy to follow and the readings were interesting. Overall, I liked how the grades were laid out for this course- there
were no surprises, everything was set at the beginning of the semester and all our homework/exams/etc. was concrete from the start, which made it better.
    "
  • "Janelle is very helpful in explaining the topics. She is also very approachable and keeps the class fun while also helping students to learn a lot."
  • "Attending class and keeping up with the readings helped me learn in this class. Janelle is really able to relate all of class topics to her students. She was very engaging throughout the year and taught us many eye-opening lessons."

  • "The teacher was one of the best I've ever had for any class.  She made us laugh and made us think and she got her point across and made us enjoy learning what she taught us.  I can't imagine having a better teacher."
  • "In addition to the films, I thought my instructor did a great job of incorporating short clips as well into the lectures.  She understood that a lot of us are visual learners, which was helpful for a student like myself."
  • "The teacher did a great job of using films and articles throughout the course to enhance the class experience.  The films and readings were always on topic and helped cultivate a greater understanding for the subject."
  • "The class discussion and enthusiasm of the instructor were major influences in the appeal for this course."
  • “Ms. Applequist created an environment that didn't make it stressful to ask questions."
  • "The variety of learning techniques and intriguing topics made it easy to follow along in and out of class.  Most of the readings covered highly interesting subjects and were highly engaging, and the documentary films we watched drove the concepts home."
  • "The summary posts we would do for homework greatly helped me learn in the class.  With having to read articles or listen to audio about hard-hitting stories, and then writing the summary posts, really helped solidify what we were learning.  Also, the videos we would watch in class helped my learning because they are a different way of presenting the information than a lecture and are often more exciting."
  • "This course allowed me to engage with and understand current events and how the media interprets them according to the government."

Memorable Comments from Students:

  • “Janelle was the main reason for this class helping me learn so much.  She is an absolutely amazing teacher who makes this hard class not feel like a class at all.  This was by far the best class I have taken in my 3 years at Penn State."
  • “This is my sixth semester at Penn State, and she is the best instructor I have had here.  Not only is she always upbeat and cheerful during class, she does a great job at explaining difficult concepts.  On top of all of that, I can tell that she actually cares about her students beyond what they do in the classroom.  She is what a professor should be - invested in educating students."
  • “Janelle makes the course so much more interesting by being very knowledgable of the material, preparing the videos and readings ahead of time, and really trying to connect them to the course material as well as "International Comm," and leading the class with a lot of student interaction and engagement, which allows students to be prepared and interact as well during class.  Janelle has a really upbeat and enthusiastic personality which  makes the learning much more interesting and removes the invisible wall that often stands between teachers and students, while taking her lectures and teaching very seriously, enhancing the effectiveness of her teaching at the same time.  In the beginning she starts class by asking what international and/or local news there are, which at first seemed like work because we have to watch or read the news, but now became something I get excited and wait for most because it willingly forces (at least) me to read the news and be aware of what is going on in the world and hear what other things are going on by hearing from what other people bring in and share in class.  Janelle is always very willing and, in reality, is there for her students and tries to work things out if there is an issue or even a little question.  While she takes participation, assignments, deadlines, etc. very seriously, she is also linear because she highly encourages and tries to help students get a better grade by explaining readings and materials clearer and giving reasonable extra credits.  Overall, you can tell Janelle really cares for her students as well as loves her teaching and takes in seriously.  It was absolutely the best having her as my instructor and I am glad to have had Janelle help me be more aware of social issues that I was not as aware of before."
  • "Janelle has made the class a very open and comfortable environment to discuss whatever it is we want to discuss.  She makes us feel comfortable and encourages us to act like an adult, say what we want to say, and be an engaged citizen.  She sets her authority as a professor but at the same time makes us feel like her friend which makes the class much more enjoyable.  I actually enjoy going to this class.  Her presentations are always clear and professional.  The readings are tough, but that's just a personal thing because I don't really like reading, but we discuss the readings in class which is really helpful in understanding the material.  Overall, she's awesome.  I haven't had many professors where I can say that."

  • "Janelle allows everything to be open to discussion within the classroom and also in her office hours.  She provides students with more than enough time to master material if they so choose to take it.  The classroom is a discussion based atmosphere about lecture, so any questions that you may have are welcomed and answered.  Janelle also allows any student to come and meet her in office hours to discuss anything they may have trouble with, are concerned with, or to review material.  The class is a perfect mix of lecture, discussion, examples, and videos to really allow the students to conquer the course material."

  • "Dr. Applequist is so far my favorite Professor in college.  She not only genuinely cares for the students, but she is hands on in directing us toward a great start to our PR careers.  I had many cases where I found myself confused about the course and my career path, and through her class and attention to detail and explanation, I was able to focus myself in the right realm of PR.  I love Dr. Applequist and really wish she could teach any of our other PR classes as well."
  • "I didn't think that I was going to like PR, but Dr. Applequist made me understand and enjoy the material.  She gives assignments that are actually helpful to your future and she's willing to work with students to give letters of recommendation or help them find opportunities and that's so important to find a Professor who cares about the students and their futures."

Memorable Comments from Students:

  • "Dr. Applequist is an amazing Instructor who cares about her students' education, and goes above and beyond to ensure that her students are learning the material.  She is always available after class to meet and answer questions about course material, and she has personally met with me and assisted me outside of class and helped me with course material.  Her lectures provide real-world examples and she teaches us how to solve problems that are relevant in today's market as Mass Communications majors.  The structure of her course is top-notch, and it includes activities that give us skills as media scholars and health campaign managers that will be useful in our future careers."
  • "Dr. Applequist is by far one of my favorite teachers I had had at USF, and I am a graduating senior.  She is fair with her grading, treats all students with respect, and presents topics in a way that is interesting and relative.  Projects were difficult and she held students to a high standard with grading.  But her rubrics were clear and project guidelines were well expressed.  Class lectures were well organized and I enjoyed learning the information she presented.  She did a great job of incorporating the book into the class in a manner that I felt my money was well spent on the book (which is something rarely experienced with many classes).  I think Applequist did an amazing job as a teacher and would recommend her classes to anyone."
  • "Your class was very informative for me.  Because of this class I am able to look at the media with a critical eye and learned how to inform myself...you know what they say...knowledge is power.  Thank you so much."

  • "She is doing an excellent job considering this is her first semester at USF.  She cares so much about the students.
  • Dr. Applequist was very explicit in her directions for assignments, which helped me to meet her expectations and get a high grade.  She has been so supportive and always dedicated her time to meet with students regarding the class and assignments.  When I did need her, sometimes I felt like it took a bit of time to hear back from her -- nothing excessive, but sometimes a few days.  I appreciate Dr. Applequist's enthusiasm and her obvious interest in helping her students develop as researchers.  Several of the Professors in this department have a half-hearted interest in teaching.  They seem to be more interested in their own research or publications, which I know they have to have for their job security, but as a student paying for their classes, it's difficult to accept that my education isn't their top priority.  I know Dr. Applequist is still early in her career, but I hope she never loses her dedication to teaching because it made all the difference for me in this class.  She cared, so I did, too.  Thanks, Dr. Applequist!"
  • "Dr. Applequist is a very professional, encouraging, and motivating teacher.  I'm glad I had a chance to learn from her.  Her classes were informative and interesting."
  • "Dr. Applequist is an excellent educator.  She facilitated the class in a manner that allowed for a thorough understanding of the concepts.  Additionally, she was clear about her expectations and communicated efficiently."
